Course Description

Course Overview

This one-day course will provide comprehensive training on FHWA’s Small Town and Rural Multimodal Networks facility design guide (known as STAR Guide for short). The guide focuses on the smaller scale places left out of established resources such as the NACTO Street Design Guide and ITE Walkable Urban Thoroughfares report.

Small town and rural communities are often left out of the discussion around active transportation. Active transportation is not always a safe option in these communities and as a result many of these communities experience health disparities. This session will provide knowledge and inspiration to work towards creating environments that support walking in small town and rural areas.

Learn from this book ideas for smaller communities, with visualizations and guidance for contemporary walking and biking facilities. Based in FHWA and AASHTO guidance, the Small Town and Rural Multimodal Networks guide applies a flexible design approach to creating more comfortable places for walking.

The course will provide an overview of the guide, a detailed look at facilities mentioned in the guide and the transportation planning process. Depending on location of the training, a short tour to look at facilities on the ground may be possible. You can view the guide document at ruraldesignguide.com.
