Course Description

This is a customized course for 6th grade elementary students who have completed The International School's (TIS) 5th grade (elementary school) Chinese immersion program.

This one-year course (September - June) is designed for students who have finished elementary school Chinese language immersion program. It prepares students to understand basic meanings of texts in Chinese language; improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening; help develop students’ techniques in using Chinese through communication as well as enhancing their understanding of Chinese culture. It is an exploratory first course tailored primarily for 6th grade students wishing to advance in Chinese language proficiency. Students will learn the language through the immersion approach.

Instructors will apply modern technology in class instruction, including, but not limited to, computer-and internet-aided tools. Students are encouraged to participate actively in the classroom and the extracurricular events for practicing what they have learned.
 
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
• Be able to recognize 500-1000 more new Chinese characters
• Be able to read 100-200 characters per minute
• Be able to reach above 90% comprehension of the certain text
• Be able to write a text of 100-150 characters in 35 minutes
• Be able to type in Chinese proficiently (with the aid of “Sougo” input)
• Accomplish writing 10 compositions in a year’s period, including  descriptive, narrative, illustrative, and argumentative writing 
• Experience cultural celebrations and events 

Prerequisites

Completion of the The International School's (TIS) 5th grade (elementary school) Chinese immersion program.
