Course Description

This course presents fundamentals of applied watershed/stream restoration: hydrologic, hydraulic, geomorphic, and ecological principles and tools applicable to the (1) assessment of watershed processes (hydrology, sediment yield, nutrient delivery), (2) assessment of reach-scale processes (riparian, fluvial, floodplains, organic matter, biological) and (3) assessment of stream channel condition (i.e., stability).  The skills acquired in this course can lead into developing approaches to stream restoration and evaluating restoration project performance.  Our approach emphasizes the inter-related nature of hydrology, hydraulics, sediment transport, geomorphology, fisheries, and aquatic and riparian ecology at both the watershed and reach-scale.  This course will provide students the opportunity to literally get their feet wet while making various observations and measurements in field exercises to evaluate physical and ecological stream characteristics and assess stream stability.
